Discovering a Supportive Workplace Changed Everything

Photo of Success Story, Greg Williams. Greg Williams worked as a self-employed carpenter and construction worker for decades— until a series of injuries pushed him to pursue a different work environment.

And when he found a new job, Greg faced an entirely different challenge.

Let’s hear Greg’s story.

I got injured 3 years in a row. They all happened right around the start of the year, like every January or February, starting in 2021.

I hurt my knee one year, my other knee the next year, and the last year I fell on concrete stairs carrying all this stuff.

After the last injury, I had to do workman’s comp and be off work for a while, which was okay with me. Dealing with medical people was almost like a full-time job anyway.

When I finally got better, I started looking for work and decided to get out of construction. I have a lot of translatable experience.

At first, I got bombarded with these scams online: good jobs with high pay that don’t exist. I also worked with a couple of different staffing agencies and unfortunately, they got me nowhere.

But then I had an interview at TERRA in Broomfield. They helped me get interviews for real, career-oriented kinds of jobs.

One interview they set me up with was for a Production Technician job at a safety equipment company and right off the bat, I was like, ‘Whoa, this is 12 minutes from home.’

In the past, I’ve literally spent 3-4 hours on the highway every day commuting to and from work. Just sitting in traffic and driving anywhere between 40 miles to 125 miles round trip.

During my interview, I met Jonathan who was going to be my trainer. Jonathan was super cool and seemed like a guy I could get along with.

When I got home, I got a call saying they wanted to hire me!

I jumped on that. I was thrilled.

But on my first day of work my significant other became really ill and dehydrated. She has a heart problem and has been in and out of the hospital. It’s been a real nightmare; it’s been really scary.

Long story short, she ended up on life support my first day of work.

I was talking to TERRA and talking to my supervisor at my new job. Everyone was extremely compassionate. I was just trying to make it through my first week of work. Fortunately, she’s okay and things are much better now.

And I am just so pleased with how things are going in my new job. The culture at this place was something I’m not used to at all. People here actually introduce themselves. My team asks me how I’m doing. There’s support and compassion and real people being vulnerable and honest. I’m so happy to be here.

I think TERRA’s just the greatest thing in the world. Without you guys, I never would have gotten my foot in the door and got to show someone what I can do in a field where I’m inexperienced.

Congratulations, Greg! We’re so happy we could help you find not only a great job in a new field, but a compassionate team that cares about you!

We wish you continued success.
